Great casual dining on the river!. I love this place. I've been there for both lunch and dinner. There are surprisingly few places to eat outdoors and on the water in our "seaside" communities. Blue Oar is a unique place to dine, situated on the Connecticut River alongside a small marina. Don't expect to have wait staff hovering over your table. This is a casual semi-self-service place. Be warned...it is BYOB (corkscrews provided) although soft drinks are available). You can make your experience more formal if you wish by bringing tablecloth, glassware, and dishes (I've seen this done). Lunch times are good for everyone and dinners probably best for adults. You can usually find a quiet table for two in a corner or gather a family of 6 at a picnic table. There are several areas like a deck, a porch (that feels a bit like a treehouse), a patio and a cabana. A cacophony of seating from brightly painted picnic tables to bistro seating adds to the charm.

You need to place your order at a counter inside, take a number, and the food is brought to you when ready. Fare is generally simple but well-made. Grilled fish and meats are usually accompanied by grilled veggies and a pasta. There are also salads and sandwiches and other offerings-depending on the time of day. Desserts are "to die for" professionally prepared concoctions of mousses, tarts and cakes.

All-in-all, I can't say enough about this charming little eatery. Go on a beautiful summer evening and bring a bottle of wine and some good friends. Enjoy!
