The Scene
How many restaurants could pull off a karaoke lounge, live piano music and sophisticated Chinese cuisine in a casual, elegant setting? Not many. But Butterfly does it--with style. The staff can be a bit standoffish, but after a round of "I Will Survive" and free hors d'oeuvres at happy hour, it's easily overlooked.
The Food
A list of 30 chef's specialties adds extra choices to the regular menu of more than 100 items. Specials like aromatic lobster tail sauteed in ginger sauce and crispy whole fish with the chef's special sauce make dinner decisions almost impossible. Familiar favorites like egg rolls, fried rice and sweet and sour chicken are given as much care as fancier items. Try the beef lo mein: soft pasta noodles studded with tender slices of beef and vegetables.

Save MoneyDon't pass up the cheap lunch specials that run Monday through Saturday, 11:30am to 3pm. With a cup of soup, rice and an entree, it's a bargain.

After reading the horrible review by a former user, my four friends and I set out to prove it wrong. We went out to eat at the Butterfly Room on Monday, March 31 2008. We went for lunch and overall had a GOOD experience! We felt the atmosphere both inside and out was nice. We were seated right away and all of out drinks came soon after. Two of my friends and I ordered water and it was refilled OFTEN. We never had to ask for refills. After odering our food, we waited only a short period of time. The food was decent and NONE of my three friends or I got sick in ANY way, shape or form!!! We had NO signs of any type of "food related illness". I enjoyed my meal and the atmosphere, we were seated next to the large aquarium which provided some entertainment, and felt the meal was acceptable. My friends all had similar reviews, even one who doesn't usually like chinese food! Our only complaint was a weird overall smell in the room. It wasn't a food-gone-bad kind of smell... more like a musty "old carpet" smell according to one of my friends.

This is an unbelievably BAD RESTAURANT experience! I brought a few friends from the office to dine at the Butterfly Restaurant in West Hartford on the evening of August 2, 2007. This restaurant looked good from the outside and I typically ordered for to-go, so I thought it'd be nice to try the dining experience with the piano etc. To start with, the hostess who seated us was friendly but the guy who served us was HORRIBLE. He did not speak much english and could not take the order correctly, and looked agitated (did not even try to hide his feeling). We kept our politeness and said thank you, we thought the food was OK and we had a full stomach after the dinner. Albeit the rude staff/server, we left a nice tip and did not say anything to the nice "manager" (a lady) when we left and she asked "everything good?" and we nodded. The next day, a couple of us felt sick, and had food related illness. I had to go to the doctor and was told I got that illness (went to bathroom a lot and feverish cold sweats, could not sleep at night)! I felt that the food was accumulating in my chest! I did not insinuate that this was because of the meals at that restaurant, but I thought we'd call and ask the manager about it. WHAT A RUDE EXPERIENCE we got! We called and was put on hold for 10 mins.. finally called back and spoke to the manager (around 12 noon during the day, August 09 2007) and he simply said "we are busy, call back at 5 pm" and HUNG UP! What an unpleasant experience! This restaurant is doubly dangerous - the food may cause you to get sick (we suspected the disgruntled server might have out something on our food) and the staff is just PLAIN RUDE! AVOID THIS PLACE, there are many other restaurants that have better food and most importantly , better people who run the place!

Cons: VERY unfriendly, rude staff, food caused illness, unpleasant experience overall
