Editorial Review for Mark Twain House – by F. Caso
History
Mark Twain lived in this 19-room Gilded Age mansion for 17 years, from 1874 to 1891. Twain wrote his major works here, including "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." The house can be viewed by guided tour only.
Features
The building is distinctive, with a red-brick design and strangely angled chimneys. The interior was decorated by Louis Tiffany of stained-glass fame and contains one of the first private telephones in the world. Regular tours of the mansion are led by guides who not only fill you in on the details of the house, but who also have dozens of amusing Twain anecdotes. Each guide has his or her own favorite stories about the house and about Twain, so that no two tours are exactly alike.
