NOT "the best in town". Calling First & Last (Avon location) the "best in town" is going a bit far, either that or the people saying that don't venture out much. My good friend and i took her sister out to celebrate news that she is expecting, unfortunately this is the place her sister chose. I ate here once before and was disappointed and now again with this recent visit. The food was just bland. When my friend returned her dinner, it came back no better...the waitress seem hurried to give us our check, didnt offer us dessert...not that we wouldve stayed for it but still. And yes, i agree with someone else's post saying the place was "poorly lit"...we had little lanterns on the table...they are pointless if you have to break out your lighter to read the menu, we overheard the couple in back of us saying the same thing about the lighting. Its one thing to maintain a soft lighting during the evening, its another when its too soft to read the menu clearly!! Anyway, this is NOT the "best in town"...take my word for it please.
Save Yourself the Trip.... Our family visited the Avon location twice, both times were disappointing. The HARTFORD location is way better (even though its parking lot is small) still better bet than Avon. Even though they are going for a rustic feeling, its still too dim inside, its blah. The kitchen is open, not always a good idea when you have cooks in the back yelling at the waitresses (we saw this both times). The focaccia bread they serve & known for, again both times..was rock hard. Our first visit my dad sent back his fried calamari , said it was tasteless & salty. Second visit we asked for our soups to be taken off the bill (were not good), they were removed from our bill but no manager came to apologize and even offer a free dessert..the waitress did apologize. Needless to say we will NOT make a 3trd visit to this location...save yourself the trip , what may look good from the outside isn't always the same inside, go to Hartford location or a different restaraunt!!
The one in Hartford is MUCH better....
My family went to the one in Avon for a family Christmas Brunch. This is something that we do every year to get the family together at least once a year. (We choose different places every year)
We chose the one in Avon thinking that it would be large enough, and also knowing that the one in Hartford always gives us phenominal service and great food.
Well, the people were nice...when they were around. The food probably would have been great (and hot) except that we only had two waiters. For a party that had between 40 & 50 people, this is definitly not acceptable.
It was beautiful inside and out, but unfortunately, that was the only thing that was good about the place.
If I were to recommend The First and Last Tavern, I would say go to Hartford. They always have great food, and great service. (it is on the small side, but they do accomodate you. Even if you have a family of 10.
Editorial Review by Christy Buena. Authentic Italian cuisine is served in a rustic and casual atmosphere ideal for private parties and special events.
Good Food and Ambiance - not just a pizza place.
There is more to this place than pizza. They have traditional italian food like lasagna which is very good. If you like a little spice, they make a nice chicken dish with pepperoncini.
I have also attended a few small parties here, where people have served either pizzas, intpasti and salad or dinners like lasagna, and herb roasted chicken and mashed potatoes.
The renovated colonial building gives a nice cozy feel right down to the black and white framed photos and creaky wooden floors.
Mini chain, but good pizza. This is the 3rd of what I believe is 3 restaurants with the same ownership. Of the 3, this is the nicest having renovated an older colonial building on Avon's main drag. Though this restaurant is a long distance from our house I had recently acquired a gift certificate at a discount and it was a nice fall evening for a drive. We were seated in the back in a wooden booth and quickly ordered our Margherita pizza. This pizza is exactly the same as we have ordered at their Hartford, original, and Middletown locations so we were not surprised by the wonderful fresh toppings of tomatoes, mozzarella and basil.
